Bummed I missed the survey. I would have suggested Neal Asher and his Polity series (The Ian Cormac series). Mr. Asher’s worldbuilding alone is brilliant, and the descriptions of his space battles has given me anxiety sweats with just the sheer energy of the battles. The Ian Cormac series (Shadow of the Scorpion, Gridlinked, The Line of Polity, Brass Man, Polity Agent, and Line War) follow the character of Ian Cormac, a Polity agent of Earth Central (think “James Bond in space” and you’ll be half right).
Neal Asher also has a spinoff series called The Spatterjay series (The Skinner, The Voyage of the Sable Keech, and Orbus), which focuses on the planet of Spatterjay, a world of very intense (and aquatic) fauna, and the ship captains that hunt them (incredible world-building at its finest).
Tthis author is definitely a must-read.
