The Best Sci-Fi Books of 2023: Nomination Round!

How has this happened? We've looked up from our books and taken a breath and found that yet another year is drawing to a close. And what a year it was, at least for books. We here at Discover Sci-Fi have enjoyed many spectacular sci-fi releases this year, and as has become tradition around these parts, we're ready to reflect back on which ones were our favorites. As always, we'd like to invite you along with us.

It is in that spirit that we are asking you to nominate your favorite sci-fi books published in 2023! We'll be holding the voting round in a few weeks time and you'll be pinned down to one selection then, but for now nominate as many as you'd like.

*Be sure to submit both the title and author name.

The Best Sci-Fi Books of 2021: Nomination Round!

"It's the most wonderful time of the year..."  —Andy Williams

Except this time, we're not talking about the holidays! While many of us here are a bit sentimental about the holidays and yes, all the mistltoeing, and marshmallow toasting, and whatnot does set our hearts a-glow, what we really love about December is the chance to reminisce about all the spectacular sci-fi books that were published during the year; and as always, we'd love for you to join us on this little nostalgia tour!

It is in that spirit that we are asking you to nominate your favorite sci-fi books published in 2021! We'll be holding the voting round in a few weeks time and you'll be pinned down to one selection then, but for now nominate as many as you'd like.

*Be sure to submit both the title and author name.

Voting now closed. See you for next year's awards!

Time to Decide: What Is the Best Sci-Fi Book of 2021 (so far)?

With so many books being released every day, it can be hard to know which ones are worth your time! Especially  if—like many of us—you already have a TBR that will outlive you. In these moments, your community of fellow readers has your back! Last week we asked the Discover Sci-Fi community to nominate the books they thought were the very best of 2021 (so far!) and dozens of great titles were added to the poll.

Now, it's time to decide.

We narrowed down the list of your nominations to the ten most voted for, and now it's time to figure out how they rank! This week you only get one vote, so make it count!

*As alway this list is made up by combining votes from this blog and our Facebook group.

What Are the Best Sci-Fi Books of 2021 (so far)?

“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”
― John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

They told us to use the time in lockdown to do our life’s best work; then they told us that a worldwide pandemic was not the time to be worrying about such things. Then Taylor Swift put out not one, but two best-selling albums in the span of six months, and as this year’s books roll out, it is apparent that for the world’s science fiction writers, 2020 was full of inspiration and that the months of isolation were put to good, even great use. All to say: there have been so many excellent books out so far this year!

Which ones are the best?

This week we are asking you to nominate and vote for your favorite books published so far in 2021. This week, the sky is the limit, so please nominate as many as you'd like here or in our Facebook group, then vote for your favorite(s).

As always, we base our lists on the votes and nominations from this blog and our Facebook Reader group, and we want to hear your opinion!

“The universe is a pretty big place. If it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space.” —Carl Sagan, Contact

Many have no doubt we are alone in the universe, but until there is indisputable proof of contact, we have the brilliant authors of science fiction to imagine what our first encounters might look like. In most cases, we hope they are wrong.  Last week we asked for your favorite first contact titles and now...

Time to Decide: Which Secondary or Ensemble Sci-Fi Characters Deserve Their Own Spin-off?

Good secondary characters are incredibly important to a story and, when written particularly well, it can be hard not want more, not to wonder what a book might look like with that character as the protagonist.

Last week we put out the call for nominations for secondary or ensemble characters who deserve their own spin-offs and as we always do for these polls, we received dozens of great entries; many of the most voted for among those—Data, Worf, River Song, Derrial Book—it turns out, already have books in which they are the protagonists. Among the remaining top contenders...

...it's time to decide.

We narrowed down the list of your nominations to the ten most voted for, and now it's time to figure out which one is the most deserving!

What Was the Best Sci-Fi Book Published in 2020 ?

While we are more than ready to turn our calendars to January, and with it our gaze toward the promise of a new year, we'd be remiss not to celebrate the best sci-fi books that came out this year. Books and the time to read them was, for many of us, a bright spot in the hellscape that was 2020. The best of those books, specifically the best sci-fi books, are what we would like to uncover in this, the last Discover Sci-Fi poll series of the year.

Of the many unforgettable science fiction books that came out this year, which was your favorite? Which sci-fi books published in 2020 were the very best? We've kickstarted things with some of the ones we loved this year; don't see your favorite(s)? Nominate them! You can do that either here or in our Facebook group. And remember that this round you can nominate and vote for as many titles as you'd like, we'll pin you down to one selection next week.

Time to Decide: What Was the Best Audiobook of 2020?

What Was the Best Audiobook Published in 2020?

Our last poll looked at the best new sci-fi series of 2020. Next up on our look back at the best of the year are audiobooks!

It was just in October that we did a poll on audiobooks. We heard from plenty of you then who hadn't tried the genre but were willing to give it a shot. If that's you, we hope you did indeed pick up one of the titles that landed on the top 10 and if you did, we hope you loved it!

While the last poll featuring audiobooks was open to nominations of books produced any year, this poll is exclusive to audiobooks put out this year. We want to know: of all the great audiobooks that came out in 2020, which one was the very best?

We've kickstarted things with some of the ones we loved this year; don't see your favorite(s)? Nominate them! You can do that either here or in our Facebook group. And remember that this round you can nominate and vote for as many titles as you'd like, we'll pin you down to one selection next week.
