Ms. Buroker does a great job of highlighting the costs of war, it aftermath, and prejudice. If there are humans involved they'll act like humans.
In this novel Captain Marchenko learns an important and unpleasant secret her husband kept from her. How she handles it and the burdens of her responsibilities are written realistically, brilliantly.
I am going to continue to read Ms. Buroker's novels.
In this book, the crew return to Perun looking for Alisa’s lost daughter, as well as dealing with the artefact that Alejandro has with him. Without giving away major spoilers, it is easy to say that things do not go according to plan when they hit the planet.
Perun is Empire controlled, and as such Alisa a former ‘Alliance’ pilot, is not welcome, even though it is home to her.
From there, things only get worse. She finds that her daughter has been taken by Starseers.
This leads to the rest of the story, which of course is part frantic search for her daughter, and part Alejandro trying to sort out his orb.
As I have said previously in other reviews, Buroker uses these stories to really explore the futility of war, the ramifications of what happens when a regime falls, and there is an unprepared victor there to take it, without the funding, military, food or resources to look after an entire system. It has led to Piracy, corruption and chaos. Even remnants of the Empire have lost order.
Buroker has written a brilliant and exceptional Universe, immersing us in a shattered future. Her characters, are well written, giving us an insight into this future. Alisa not only takes us through this future, but her sarcasm and wit take the edge off some aspects of the story. Her interactions with Leonidas give this story an edge over other stories at times, being reminiscent of Firefly, and similar genres. The interactions between Mica and Beck are also highly entertaining, making the dialogue in this story not only amusing, but very easy to read. This does not degrade from the story, but really adds to the realism and feel of the crew. As they travel together the bond between them grows, and so does the banter.
This is an exceptional book, Buroker is a brilliant author and if you like Mil Sci-Fi stories with a good sense of humour, especially if you have an interest in Firefly, this is definitely for you.
I did have to suspend a bit of disbelief at how far the protagonist was willing to go in order to defend her former enemy against her own side, but somehow it seemed reasonable.
Highly entertaining and well done, as usual.
