Marc Goldhamer says:
The Martian, is by far one of my favorite, sci-fi novels of this century. When I viewed the film, I was the only one, who laughed, at certain scenes, in the film. It was obvious, that most of the other film watchers, had not read, said book, because of their reaction to my laughter. Mark Watney, (Matt Damon) played the part of the lonely Astronaut, like a top comic doing stand-up. The ability to carry a film, on one’s shoulders, is not easy. The film, was a fantastic, tribute to the author and the book.
Thanks for being a fan, Michael! It’s hard with these reader-decided polls to constantly update them while they’re live, but we ensure that only the top/relevant selections make it through to the voting round.
Not sure how Blake Crouch makes this list – does he have connections to this site – and I love Emily St. John Mandel but where are all the extraordinary Hugo award winning women – Ann Leckie – N. K. Jemisin, Bujold, Walton – where’s The Wind Up girl? Among Others, All the birds in the Sky, Ted Chiang?
Thanks for stopping by, John! These polls are 100% reader-led and democratic in nature. We audit to make sure selections that don’t meet our criteria (in this case: a standalone book published after 2010), but otherwise have no handle in the selections. To view the original nominations list and see who didn’t make the cut check out: https://discoverscifi.com/what-is-the-best-stand-alone-sci-fi-book-last-decade/ We combine the votes between the polls hosted on our blog, and our Facebook reader group: facebook.com/groups/dsfreaders

Spot on!
So happy they cleaned up both the question and the nominees from the prelim poll. Overall a really strong selection of novels.
