We love a good retrospective, and with only seven weeks left in 2020, we thought it was the perfect time to start looking back at the best of the year. We could all use that, right? A reminder that despite all that 2020 was, there were some bright spots, and many of those came in the form of books; books in general, and brand spanking new series, specifically.
Yes, for the series lovers among us, it was a very good year, a year that saw the launch of several noteworthy new sci-fi series. But which one was the best...? We have our favorites and we would love to hear yours, so let's get to the nominations rolling, shall we?
We've kickstarted the list with some of the new sci-fi series we loved this year, but this is a democratic process, and as always, we are excited to hear your nominations, too! Please nominate as many as you'd like here or in our Facebook group and remember that for this opening round, you can vote for as many as you'd like as well!

Frankly I’m wondering what’s happened to SF writers. This year I’ve mostly reread older books, because the new ones I’ve brought I’ve found that I get partway and dump them. Two of those listed on this site as the first in great new series, I couldn’t get past 20% before discarding them. My local library was happy, but I wasn’t. They had great blurbs, but that was the best part. Sigh. I couldn’t connect with the characters and that’s fatal for a reader. Oh well. I can only hope 2021 does better by me.
You might want to try the “Time Wars” series by Craig Robertson. Most of his stuff has been pretty tame, but this one is going pretty well. It involves his old protagonist Jon Ryan, but this series is doing a great job of bringing in new people and concepts. It will be a six-book series, and I believe the third book is available now. Maybe the fourth.
The best thing about living in a free country is that I don’t have to read any of these books! What a sorry looking lot.
Happily working my way through my 2,000 or so unread books, 1950s through about 2010 or a little after. The greats–Vance, Sheckley, Benford, De Camp, Kay, Tanith Lee, McDevitt, Niven, Alastair Reynolds, Silverberg, Stross, Tepper, Banks, Powers, Pratt, Pratchett, Sawyer, Sheffield, Vinge, Zelazny…

Please omit “Bobiverse by Naylor Grant”? I adored the Bobiverse series, which is by Dennis Taylor, and isn’t a 2020 release.
I totally agree with you! Dennis E Taylor is da man!

I vote Bryce O’Connor and Luke Chmilenko’s Iron Prince!
