Strictly speaking, it was loosely adapted from the (great) Clarke short story “Sentinel”. The books was more or less contemporaneously written with the screenplay of the movie, so it’s not clearly an adaptation of the novel.

“Dune” is a hideous choice. I have seen two versions and it would be hard to pick the worse of the two. Perhaps if Peter Jackson would do it as a trilogy so the details of the factions, breeding, politics, training, philosophies and depth of characters could be developed a movie MIGHT be possible. The last one I saw had bald Bene Gesserit. What the ifni was that all about?

Star Wars is easily the best film but it probably doesn’t belong in this vote. There was a book that came out before the film, but it was to promote the movie and based on Lucas’ script.
