I’m going to age myself but we left out one of the earliest postapocalyptic novels that introduced themes of human interaction, tough decisions to maintain genetic diversity, hard science like tidal forces, gravitic interactions and the destruction of Earth as a planet. The book was Wylie and Ballmer’s “When Worlds Collide”. circa 1932. It also had a sequel “After Worlds Collide”
I had a hardback copy of this one for years.
The best post-apocalyptic novel I’ve ever read was Neville Shute’s “On The Beach” I’ve also read a few good ones from J.G. Ballard, but my favorite post-apocalyptic author by far is John Wyndham
A great storytelling is important in creating not just a science fiction story, but any other stories in literature. Aside from ideas, concepts, and themes, the quality of story telling is also essential in determining the goodness of a story.
