I thoroughly enjoyed Elizabeth Moons Trading in Danger series but I do love ‘space operas’, ie. David Weber and the Honor Harrington series.

Indeed. Also Octavia Butler, Nicola Griffith, Sherri Tepper, Joanna Russ, Joan D. Vinge, Connie Willis. And new authors N.K. Jemesin, Anne Leckie, Nnedi Okorafor…

No Leigh Brackett? Seriously? She only wrote “The Sword of Rhiannon,” and the Erick Stark series. No C. L. Moore? You know, the writer of “Black God’s Kiss” and many others. I’ll go with Andre Norton, but I am shaking my head at who you left off this list.
